Everything You Need to Know About Peeing in the Shower (P.S. It’s Actually Good for You)

        Don’t tell me you haven’t done it before, because I’m pretty sure everyone’s done it at one point or another in their time of showering. Don’t lie either; you’ve totally peed in the shower once, or twice, or several times before.

        Don’t worry, I’m not judging you! Hell, I just said everyone’s probably done it at one time or another, including me.

        I know what you’re thinking. And, I know what you’re thinking when you think about peeing in the shower, “It’s gross, I can’t possibly allow my urine to touch my feet.” However, it just so happens that that thought quickly passes through your mind and you end up peeing anyways! Mainly because why would you want to get out of the nice, warm shower, to sit on a semi-cold toilet seat that will have you sliding around and sticking to it once the act of peeing is over. Phew, that was a long rant.

        Seriously, though, peeing in the shower quickly becomes a no-brainer. Once you do it one time, you tend to do it again, and again, and again. You may think you’re totally disgusting for peeing in the shower, but as I said before, you’re not the only one. In fact, approximately 80% of people have claimed they’ve done it before, and they’ll do it again.

        If you’re still skeptical of the action, I’m here to set you straight. I’ve done my research to see what the experts have to say: Is peeing in the shower hygienic or is it totally not okay for you? Let’s check out their responses below (responses will be bold with explanations following).

It’s fairly hygienic.

First and foremost, urine is made up of waste materials from your bloodstream. This, in turn, makes urine the primary hotspot for all waste products, such as water, electrolytes, and urea.

With that being said, urine is not sterile (even though the popular belief of the topic says so). Even if you’re the healthiest person you’ve ever known, your urine is still apt to contain bacteria.

Now, with all of that being said, peeing in the shower is fairly hygienic. This is because of the never-ending stream of water supplied to you by the shower nozzle. This nozzle allows clean water to wash away the sometimes bacteria-filled urine. This means that you won’t be at any hygiene risk.

It is environmentally friendly.

Did you know that older toilets can use up to 7 gallons of water every time a person flushes their urine or feces down? Did you know that saving a flush by peeing in the shower will save those 7 gallons of water for drinking purposes, cooking purposes, and a variety of other purposes? In turn, this allows your household to cut back on the amount of water it uses on a daily basis. It also means that the monthly water bill may be a little bit lower, too.

Think about those facts next time you’re contemplating peeing in the shower.

Your pelvic floor muscles may become stronger if you do this.

If you do normal, everyday Kegel exercises, you’re gaining pelvic floor muscle. However, if you pee in the shower, you’re also gaining pelvic floor muscles by contracting and releasing your muscles. Once you strengthen those muscles, you’ll be able to improve the blood flow to those areas. Once you improve the blood flow to those areas, you’ll be able to improve your sex life (thrusting techniques and such). Do you get where the cycle is going? Peeing in the shower is good for your health and good for your sex life.

In addition, professionals claim that doing Kegels in the shower can actually improve a man’s urinary control. This can specifically help those who have had prostate surgery or nerve damage in the area.

There’s a possibility it could be good for athlete’s foot.

There’s an old wives’ tale that goes a little something like this: Apparently, if you pee on your feet in the shower, you’ll be able to cure or prevent your foot fungus known as athlete’s foot. Though many people believe this tale in its entirety, medical professional Glatter states that there is no valid proof as to if this myth is fact or fiction. Studies have not been conducted to confirm that urine is used to prevent foot fungus of any kind, and studies have not been done to prove that urine could be a so-called therapy to help those with athletes’ foot.

However, it is true that the product in your urine known as urea is found in some athlete’s foot anti-fungal creams. Urea is used to soften the skin, in turn allowing it to penetrate and get rid of the fungus on the applied and affected areas. In theory, and only in theory, this bodily fluid known as urea could potentially help treat or prevent such a fungal infection.

However (I know, another however), urea is only present in the urine in very small amounts. In other words, you’d have to pee a lot or have a lot of urine saved up in that bladder of yours for the urea to actually have an effect on your athlete’s foot.

        In conclusion, if you get all grossed out by bodily fluids such as urine, you should probably stick to peeing in the toilet. But if you’re in the shower and have that severe urge to pee, and you don’t want to get out of that warm shower to sit on a slippery toilet seat, pee your urine away. It won’t do you any harm. It may even benefit you in the long run.
